Slice of Life

Slice of Life is a series of sculptures derived from various iterations of the mathematician John Conway's algorithmic process, the Game of Life.   The Game is executed on a grid of cells where each cell can be either dark or light, filled or unfilled, live or dead, and cells are made live or dead through each step in the Game.

The rules are as follows:

For a cell that is 'full' or 'populated'

* Each cell with 1 or no neighbors dies on the next step, as if by loneliness.

* Each cell with 4 or more neighbors dies on the next step, as if by overpopulation.

* Each cell with 2 or 3 neighbors survives on the next step.

For a cell that is 'empty' or 'unpopulated'

* Each cell with 3 neighbors becomes populated on the next step.

Usually the Game is visualized in time, each generation replacing the previous one on the grid.   In this series of sculptures, each generation is situated in space, creating a floating three-dimensional visualization of the Game.
